In the welcome address, Wang Ping, Dean of School of Scientific Research and Development, Southwest Jiaotong University, on behalf of the university, expressed sincere gratitude to the attending leaders and experts, and said that as the legal entity undertaking the project, the university will intensify project supervision and management while guaranteeing the smooth implementation of the project. He also hoped that the project team would strictly abide by the management and financial systems, report the work progress to the authorities and experts at all levels in a timely manner, and complete each research task on time with quality and quantity. Associate Researcher Yang Wei of the Administrative Center for China's Agenda 21 delivered a speech on behalf of Director Zhong Ping. He expressed congratulations to the project undertaker and the participants, explained the significance of the special project of "solid waste recycling", emphasized the matters that need attention during the project implementation, and hoped that the project team would enhance exchanges with experts for a smooth implementation of the project.

At the demonstration meeting, the project leader, Professor Zhao Rui, explained the implementation plan from five aspects, namely, research background, research objectives, research content, research basis, and project management; and the leaders of four tasks gave a report on the implementation plan respectively. An expert group led by Academician Wang Chao was established, who reviewed, questioned and discussed the project implementation plan and agreed to adopt the project implementation plan. The expert group also highly recognized the preliminary work and made recommendations and observations regarding the project and its implementation. At last, Liu Guoxiang, on behalf of the Faculty of Geosciences and Environmental Engineering, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the attending leaders and experts, and put forward specific requirements for the project implementation, including effective performance of responsibilities, construction of honesty and faithfulness in scientific research, and regulated use of project funds.

In response to the challenges of varied sources, large quantities, numerous varieties and complex metabolic paths of urban solid waste and the reality that existing solid waste management information technology fails to support accurate control, the project "New Technology of Urban Solid Waste Big Data Mining and Full Life Cycle Control", a key special project of the "solid waste recycling" of National Key R&D Program, by adopting the model of industry-university research cooperation, intends to make breakthroughs in data-knowledge integration driven intelligent decoding technology for solid waste dumps and waste generation sources, solid waste quantity and component acquisition technology by UAV close-view monitoring and multi-source big data mining, intelligent analysis technology of spatial and temporal distribution features of urban solid waste, and construction technology of spatio-temporal visual recycling and metabolism mapping of urban solid waste, and develop a full life cycle accurate control platform of urban solid waste, so as to realize accurate supervision, intelligent analysis and real-time monitoring of urban solid waste in building a waste-free city.
